I started taking pictures with my camera as I walked along the streets, of graffiti, stains, street signage and serial numbers on telegraph poles or wall textures or (official) street markings, anything that symbolises something to someone but remains a mystery to most. People walk past these marks and symbols everyday without notice or consideration of their meaning. I wanted to communicate and integrate these in my artwork in a different mode to create different forms. On a deeper psychological level, I prescribed them with my own meaning. Interestingly enough I have a similar relationship with the sky in that I want to give it new meaning in my paintings with these contemporary urban signs – non-conformist (tagging) on top of official directives, instructions and markers for city workers who manage our water and power, our rubbish, our public utilities.
